Ravens alumni tee-off in tribute to former coach

Amid sunny skies and team spirit, more than 140 former Carleton men’s basketball players and friends teed-off in memory of a beloved coach and teammate at the third annual Pat O’Brien Golf Classic on July 12.

Hosted each year by the Carleton University Ravens Basketball Alumni Association, the tournament honours Pat O’Brien, a long-time Carleton employee, Ravens coach and team captain, and raises funds for the current team. Organizers estimated approximately $7,000 was raised at this year’s event.

This year, players tested their swings at the Canadian Golf and Country Club west of Ottawa. Two foursomes—one led by assistant coach Taffe Charles, the other made up of basketball referees—shared the victory, each shooting an impressive 12 under par.

The players later moved to the clubhouse for dinner and to award the 2004 Pat O’Brien Scholarship—presented this year to Ravens MVP Mike Smart.

In the past, proceeds have supported the Pat O’Brien Scholarship fund. With the scholarship now safely endowed, a portion of this year’s proceeds will go directly to the men’s basketball team for equipment, travel costs and other expenses.
