Survivor: Carleton for new faculty members

This month, the Educational Development Centre (EDC) is offering a number of orientation sessions for new faculty and contract teaching staff.

Survivor: Carleton is a daylong introduction to the basics of teaching at Carleton and includes hands-on training in WebCT 6 (Carleton’s course management software), and a campus tour. Sessions are available for both faculty and contract instructors, half-day sessions for contract instructors allow more scheduling flexibility.

New Faculty Orientation is designed to give new full-time faculty members an understanding of the university’s overall structure and services as well as an insight into Carleton students, assistance in the enhancement of their teaching skills and living in Ottawa.

A day-long family event on Saturday, August 25 includes a tour of Parliament Hill, followed by a boat cruise on the Rideau Canal.

Contract Instructor Orientation is a one-day program for contract instructors, which includes various sessions on policies and procedures, equity in the classroom and information on educational technology. New faculty members are urged to participate in the activities.

“The events provide an opportunity to establish interdisciplinary relationships early that may lead to research partnerships,” says Maggie Cusson, the EDC’s manager of teaching development and support.

The EDC is contacting new faculty through their departments and is informing departmental administrators of all mailings.
