University Safety News

Safety Tip of the Month

Carleton University is considered one of Ottawa’s “bike theft hot zones” based on Ottawa Police statistics. The Department of University safety has had 12 bicycles thefts reported since April 1. Bicycles are one of the most common items stolen on campus and, as a result, we would like to remind the Carleton community of some key theft prevention tips.

Summary

Our department offers a bicycle registration program and free engraving service to students, staff and faculty. Carleton also has a secure bicycle compound that requires a pass-card to access. The university has installed more bicycle racks on campus as properly securing your bicycle to a designated rack aids in the deterrence of theft. Reports have also shown that cable locks and chains have proven less effective then U- Bolt locks. For more information please visit our Bicycle Registration page at: www.carleton.ca/safety.
