The goal of any risk management or loss control program is to reduce or eliminate the risk of a negative event happening. In the university setting this means ensuring the safety of students, faculty and staff as they pursue their academic and research activities as well as preventing situations which could result in legal action against the institution.
The Winter Maintenance Program implemented by Physical Plant is an excellent example of the loss control programs being introduced at Carleton University. This program prioritizes heavy traffic areas for snow removal and sidewalk maintenance thus reducing the risk of injury to members of the community. The program follows guidelines recommended by the Canadian insurance industry and implemented at other universities across the country.
The program’s goal of reducing injuries caused by slips and trips on campus sidewalks and stairs has been achieved. Since its implementation in 2005, injuries have been reduced by about 70 per cent, while other claims have been cut by 100 per cent.
