National Engineering Week 2004 — Carleton activities

This year, March 1 – 5 marks National Engineering Week, and again Carleton University engineering students have taken it upon themselves to organize a number of exciting activities to raise awareness of how engineering impacts the life of each and every Canadian.

“National Engineering Week is a national celebration of engineering excellence,” says third year aerospace engineering student, and Carleton Engineering Week Chair Alex Smith-Windsor. “Carleton’s engineering students are taking advantage of the opportunity to get involved with the community and to show how fun and rewarding studying engineering can be.”

Here’s what’s happening this week:

  • High School Presentations—Monday, March 1 – Friday, March 5—Ottawa Area High SchoolsCarleton University engineering students will visit high school science classes during National Engineering Week. Working alongside the teachers, they will show students how high school studies apply to engineering problems and real life technology.
  • Breakfast @ the New RO—Tuesday, March 2, 7:00 – 9:00 a.m.—Carleton Engineering Lab
  • Engineering Design Competition—Monday, March 1; Wednesday, March 3; Friday, March 5—Carleton UniversityStudents from local schools will take part in design competitions. Students and accompanying teachers will be treated to lunch.

    – Monday: Grades 7 and 8 (Baker Lounge)
    – Wednesday: Grades 11 and 12 (Fenn Lounge)
    – Friday: Grades 4 and 5 (Baker Lounge)

  • Mall Display—Tuesday, March 2—Rideau CentreCarleton engineering students will be on hand at the display to discuss and answer questions about becoming an engineer. The display will feature student projects and other items demonstrating how engineering principles are integrated into daily living.
  • Pie Throw Charity Event—Thursday, March 4—Carleton UniversityAll proceeds go to Engineers Without Borders, a Canadian charity that focuses on the use of technology to help solve problems in developing countries.
  • Iron Ring Reception—Friday, March 5—Campus LoungeEngineering students will host a reception to honour this year’s engineering graduates. Friends and families of the graduates are welcome at this traditional Carleton event.
