The simple courage to make a difference

This year’s theme for the United Way/Centraide Ottawa campaign is simple courage … to believe in what’s possible.

I believe that simple courage resides in all of us. We just have to take the first step towards turning possibilities into reality. As a student, teacher, employee or alumnus of Carleton University, you each can make a difference in the lives of others. However small, however simple, your contribution matters.

It matters to the homeless teenager living on our streets. It matters to the senior looking for the support she needs to stay in her home. It matters to the new immigrant who wants to contribute but doesn’t know where to turn. It matters to the person with disabilities who relies on assistance to get around. And it matters to the child who goes to school hungry.

The United Way/Centraide campaign brings people together to build a strong, healthy, safe community for all. People from all walks of life hold bake sales, canvass door to door, organize races and wash cars. Others donate their time to a cause dear to their hearts or reach into their own pockets to make a contribution.

This type of grassroots support helped United Way/Centraide raise a record $28.2 million last year—the largest amount in our 73-year history. Agencies and organizations in our community use this money to serve children and youth, seniors, people in need and crisis, people with disabilities and immigrants.

The strides we make each and every year in “building community and changing lives” underscore the commitment and passion that many people share in wanting to make Ottawa a better place in which to live.

As this year’s campaign chair, I am asking each of you to move on this simple courage, to follow your heart and do what you can to help.

Thanks for your support.
