Greg Jefford – Residence Life, Housing and Conference Services

For the past two years I have been proud to initiate, organize and host “Big Brothers Big Sisters Comes to Carleton Day.” With the support of Residence Life and the Department of Housing and Conference Services, this annual event is held on campus for one day during March Break.

The event brings Carleton student volunteers and Big Brothers Big Sisters Ottawa together for an organized day of fun at our wonderful University.

Big Brothers Big Sisters Ottawa enables girls and boys, especially those living under challenging circumstances, to achieve their full potential as young women and men. They provide opportunities to help them form positive relationships with adult volunteers through a variety of one-on-one and group programs.

Support to help make this day memorable both for the kids and their Big Sister Big Brother is crucial, and I’m appreciative of all the support I receive across campus. I was hesitant at first to get involved because of the possible time commitment or lack of support, but instead I witnessed how the Carleton community can work together to invoke positive change. In fact, each year, I have even had to turn student volunteers away. All have been extremely generous with their monetary donations.

More importantly, Big Brothers Big Sisters Ottawa, is an agency supported by the United Way. My involvement with this charity dates back to my time as a student at Carleton, and I have seen how it makes a huge difference in the lives of so many. It’s why I support the United Way—because I have seen first-hand how their financial support translates into building a stronger, better community.
