Laura Lauzon – Business Office

It’s funny when you are younger and just starting to work, or just getting married, or just starting a family that you feel you will never need the services of United Way agencies. A monthly contribution or a lump sum donation seems to be non-essential, with other demands of life much more important.

When I started at Carleton 30 years ago, I too did not put much value into the United Way campaign. I saw it as another deduction off my paycheque, not as an investment for my future. In 1986 I became a Loaned Representative from Carleton to United Way solely as a career building exercise. I quickly realized the value United Way plays in our community. I also realized the importance given to United Way outside the University. United Way is something Ottawa-Carleton takes seriously.

My investment in United Way paid off for my family when we encountered difficult times with one of our daughters during her early teen years. Everyone we turned to knew we needed assistance, but the waiting lists for support through the hospitals and medical centres were endless. We needed help immediately to get us through tough times. By calling on a United Way agency, we got counselling and contacts that benefited us right away, not months after the fact. The help we got from that one phone call was the glue that helped keep our family solid.

United Way is probably one of the best investments you can make – for yourself and your family. A few dollars a month now will ensure these agencies can continue to provide support. Make United Way part of your financial plan for the future!
