Let’s work together to show how much Carleton cares

I’m very excited to be this year’s United Way Campaign Chair. Year after year, Carleton students, faculty and staff give generously of their time and money to support this worthy cause. Last year alone, we raised more than $140,000. It just goes to show how much Carleton cares.

Still, I believe we can do so much more. That’s why this year I’ve set an even more ambitious goal—to raise $150,000 to support the vital services of the United Way. Currently, slightly more than 30 percent of Carleton faculty and staff contribute to the United Way, but I know we can do better. This year, I’d like to see that number rise to at least 50 percent. As a means to encourage greater participation, each department will be sent a “participation metre” to monitor its progress. Sometimes a little friendly competition can go a long way! If we can increase participation, I’m confident we’ll easily reach our financial goal.

Every dollar counts. No matter what you can afford, you can be sure that what you give goes directly towards helping those in greatest need in our community. I encourage everyone to get involved and experience how great it feels to make a difference.

With this year’s grand ambitions, Carleton’s United Way Committee has partnered with the Department of University Communications to help raise the profile of our annual campaign. This special edition of Carleton NOW is just one way we are hoping to increase awareness and inspire everyone in the Carleton community to contribute in whatever capacity they are able. Inside, you can read the personal testimonies from a number of your colleagues who have seen first-hand how the United Way makes a difference in people’s lives.

Please make a gift, get involved, and help us reach our goal. If someone asks you why you give, simply say: “I care…Carleton cares!”

Together we can invest in hope!
