A vision for student success by strengthening community

This year, we admitted more than 5,000 students into first year. Nearly half accepted residence offers. But this still leaves more than half our first-year students living off-campus. For many of these students, being at Carleton means little more than attending classes. In particular, they are not members of any learning communities.

Students learn much from each other, and creating space where learning communities can form makes this as easy as possible. To this end, we’ve been opening up areas where students can congregate informally, the most recent example of which is the construction currently underway at the tunnel level on the southwest corner of the quad.

An additional push for this comes from a new understanding of how students learn, which has led to the adoption of active learning methods. Carleton is in the forefront of these developments.

A new dimension will be added to the concept of a learning community, and to our support for active learning, when we open the doors to a Learning Commons as an integral part of the MacOdrum Library. With careful planning, dedicating space in the Library to learning and its support will revolutionize how our students view, and use, the Library.

The articles on these pages address some of the key issues in planning a learning sommons. These articles are designed to stimulate discussion among students, staff, and faculty within the Carleton community about just what we might be able to achieve with enough forethought. I look forward to your participation in this discussion.
